Storage and server upgrades

Choose extra storage and increase an existing database’s resources without changing its connection details.

Choose storage during setup

The pricing calculator and deployment wizard show included storage per node. Use Extra GB to add attached NVMe storage within the displayed limit. When you select extra storage, your database data uses a separate volume rather than spare space on the server’s system disk. Storage is replicated across the nodes you choose, so the monthly extra-storage charge includes every node’s copy. Review the total before payment.

Upgrade a running database

Open your database and select Upgrade. Choose a compatible node type, adjust extra storage and review the new monthly price. Only increases supported by the running server are shown. Your regions and node quantities stay the same; storage and existing database, user and recovery allowances cannot be reduced.

Payment and progress

Confirm the new monthly price and the connection interruption. Polar charges the prorated difference and future renewals use the new monthly amount. Paid upgrades begin only after payment is confirmed. Progress updates in the Upgrade tab. Do not submit another payment if confirmation needs attention; contact support with the reference shown.

What changes during an upgrade

We save a verified cloud backup first. Server-size upgrades resize the existing servers without reinstalling the database. Adding attached storage for the first time stops the database while its data moves to the volume, then verifies the database is using that filesystem. Later storage increases expand the same volume. A single-server migration interrupts connections; a cluster changes nodes individually with health checks and a writer switchover. Connections may briefly interrupt, so applications should reconnect and retry safely. Your hostname, port and database credentials remain the same. For Valkey, extra disk expands persistence capacity; increase server memory to hold a larger active dataset.
